Letter from Mayor Rick Green dated 29 April, 2009

Fraser River Dikes Assessment Report

==================================================================================

14th April 2009

The Mayor and Councillors,

Township of Langley

Dear Sir,

In January 2008, the Fort Langley Community Association organized a public meeting with a presentation on Waterfront Development with a presentation by Paul Crawford from the Township Planning Department and consultant Marta Farevaag. They indicated that preliminary proposals would be prepared for discussion by the end of 2008, but we have been told that nothing is yet available.

The Association also carried out a community opinion survey in April 2008 on various development issues, and the results were presented to council in May 2008.

The Association is concerned that discussions and decisions may be taking place despite the lack of communication from the Township.

We ask for reassurance on three specific matters :

  • That no new proposal for buildings higher than 2.5  storeys is being considered for the area north of the railway line, in accordance with section 2.4 of the Fort Langley Community Plan.
  • That no changes to the residential or commercial components of the Bedford Landing Comprehensive Development Plan are being considered.
  • That the pedestrian overpass across the railway line from the centre of the Bedford Landing site to 96th Avenue is still an integral part of this development.

We would appreciate receiving a response within one month,

Yours truly,

Rodney Blackwell,

Chair

The Mayor and Councillors,

Township of Langley

Dear Sir,

In January 2008, the Fort Langley Community Association wrote to the former Mayor and council requesting a study of raising one of the access roads to Fort Langley so that, in the event of major Fraser River flooding, residents could still have access to their properties. Brad Badelt, Manager of Water Resources, met with the Fort Langley Community Association last October and informed us that a report had been prepared and would be presented to council.

Would you please inform us when this report will be available to the public. Although it does not appear to be a critical issue this year, we are once again approaching the period when flooding may occur.

We look forward to receiving your response.

Yours truly,

Rodney Blackwell,

Chair
